Sometimes it's difficult to tell whether roughness and tear-out are caused by the wood itself or by blades that have gradually lost their edge. How noticeable is the improvement when you install a fresh set of knives, especially on difficult hardwoods?

I realize this thread is a bit stale, but I wanted to share my experience with fresh planer blades. On figured maple, a new set made roughness almost vanish—night and day. Have you tried different blade materials, like carbide vs. high-speed steel?

Dull blades definitely make a big difference on hardwoods. I switched to dewalt planer blades and saw much less tear-out on maple and oak. A fresh edge cuts cleaner, so it is worth trying new ones before blaming the wood.
