So it seems my problems were all minor...
After much faffing about I came across this link -

Also came across this link in elation to synchronising time between your local device and the exchange (any exchange) -

A week and a half of sheer ball ache but at least I'm up and running. I expect further ball ache trying to make a profit but what else would you be doing on a sunny spring evening (dog tugs at trouser leg)...

As mentioned, total newbie to gunbot but fairly computer literate - moderate programming abilities etc. My software seems to be making an effort at connecting to my exchange but not quite making it... I have searched the forum for info on the error codes but nothing comes forth... I know I'll be up and running at some point and will be sure to post my fixes for other newcomers..
